FFXI Lesson #3: The Game Is Dead

The Hyur watches as his Hume brothers will die a painful death in the next few months

To quote a true veteran player on the FFXIAH.com forums, the new expansion/DLC is "the same old shit with this update, just more waste of time." So why are you still playing? I know why I am back to playing. I've bought the game twice and originally played at release and I don't have one level 75 character to show for it. Should I just quit while I'm behind and wait to crush it when FFXIV comes out? The money doesn't concern me. Assuming I end up going to Korea, I really do have it to burn.

There's no bonus for importing FFXI characters so why are you still trying? Maybe because your discount laptop can't begin to dream of running the FFXIV benchmark? I know my computer scored "Low." Which is exactly what I scored when the original FFXI benchmark came out. This time around, I don't feel bad because I know the Japanese still can't make optimized code to save their lives in the gaming industry.

I don't even know why I want a 75 anymore. It'll take me at least a month to hit 75. Probably another two weeks to hit the new cap of 80. I'll be taking a month break to get adjusted to life in Korea. That leaves me with about two weeks to enjoy my capped RDM. Two weeks to try my hand at a Dynamis, or Sky, or Sea (whatever those are) and you know go after all my merit points. You would be mistaken to think for a second that I'll be playing FFXI once FFXIV comes out. I'm not 14 anymore, I don't have that kind of time to waste. So should I quit already? I feel like I'm at that point. Maybe my friend Scot is just rubbing off on me.

  1. Uh oh, I feel this movement to quit gathering steam, haha. You already know what I keep running into, and as the end draws near, it becomes increasingly not worth it. I think I’ll keep playing this month at least, but then we’ll have to reevaluate. I have some other games to slay. Because once we hit September, it’s all Reach and FFXIV.

  2. FFXI died for me as soon as they announced FFXIV.

90% of the people I knew who played were teetering on quitting and that made them quit pretty much that day.

I had a 75 SAM and DRK, what server do you play on? (I kind of miss playing TBH.)

    Haha, also, sup?

    • FFXIV announcement actually reignited my desire to play FFXI. However, I think my dwindling time in the states and the level cap killed it for me. Most of my old FFXI friends stopped playing. In the end, across 3 cd-keys and 2 servers I never made 75. 63-64 RDM is around the level I stopped. Paid for but didn’t play a day in July.

Don’t go back, just wait for FFXIV and we’ll start a clan/company (or whatever their calling the new linkshell).

As far as what’s up: I’m taking some time to myself and teaching ESL in Korea in the mean time. It’s been a minute but it’s good to hear from you. Are you still in to art? Drop me a line (e-mail on the about page) or feel free to friend me on the evil that is Facebook (Tarrick Clayton in the UMBC/Baltimore network).

  3. Old post, but I feel the need to point out that FFXI is thriving and FFXIV is suffering.

    • Yeah, it’s funny how I saw the end of FFXI and now it looks like FFXIV is going to die before FFXI shuts down. Expect a post of my thoughts on the subject very soo.

    • I find this to be the stupid irony that SquareEnix has come to deliver on the regular. No idea why I expected FFXIV to come out any better than FFXIII. Here’s hoping they do actually turn this game around.
